NAMI NYC, the National Alliance of Mental Illness which provides free mental health resources to New Yorkers, organizes a large walk and festival event each year at the Seaport in Manhattan. For this event we worked with their team to find a way to create an installation that would honor and incorporate the NAMI community, lend itself to an additional interactive component at the event, and be able to be installed in their office following the event.
Using the phrase "I am a proud _____" we hoped to honor and illuminate the hard work, both personal and professional, of the community. We hand painted 32 signs with sentiments from NAMI NYC staff and supporters who were so moved seeing their accomplishments recognized in such a meaningful way. On site Annica was available at the event to make smaller custom signs for participants on demand with their own declarations of pride. People proudly held up their signs as they participated in the fundraising walk.
The wall onsite was 8'x12' and after the emotional and celebratory event the signs were removed and brought to the NAMI NYC headquarters where they could be installed in any configuration.
